Ussishkin, Menahem Mendel
(1863-1941)
   Russian Zionist leader. He was born in Dubrovno in the district of Mohilev in Belorussia; he moved to Moscow in 1871. He was a founder of the Zionist youth group Bilu in 1882, and of the Bene Zion society in 1884; in 1897 he attended the First Zionist Congress as a delegate. He published a pamphlet, Our Program, in 1903, advocating a policy of political activity and practical work in Palestine. In the same year he convened an assembly of Palestinian Jews at Zikhron Yaakov and a teachers' conference. After returning to Russia, he organized the Tziyyone Zion (1904) in opposition to the proposal for a Jewish homeland in Uganda. In 1906 he went to Odessa, where he became leader of the Hovevei Zion. He later settled in Palestine, where he was appointed chairman of the Jewish National Fund.
